I want an appointment – what do I do?

How to set an appointment

After I receive a request for more information, I will try respond to you by email or phone as soon as I am able to. I have a system for clients to book their appointments online. This online schedule allows you to view the times available for my free 30 minute consultations, initial intake appointments and counselling appointments. You can find it here.  I am most often in session with clients so it can take me up to 48 hours to respond to phone calls. I strongly encourage you to use the online booking system to schedule a meet and greet. These are 15 minute up to 30 minute free consultation times to meet me, see my space and determine if my service is the best fit for your needs. My entire schedule and what is available is online, and there is a waitlist feature you can add yourself so I know to contact you if I have a cancellation. It is the quickest and easiest way to schedule an appointment and I will redirect you there in my voicemail as well.

I am not a crisis service. If you find that you are in need of immediate assistance, there is the local crisis line that can be reached at 1-888-494-3888 and also the walk in Crisis Counselling Clinic at Brooks Landing Mall #203-2000 Island Highway. I encourage you to use the online appointment scheduler as that is the most up to date and easiest way to find an appointment time that will work for you, however if there isn’t anything available online that works for you then we work together to find a time that will. Please note that I do not work Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I have limited evenings available and generally have my last appointment at 4:00 as I have small children that I need to get home to.

Where to find me? Where do I park?

My private office is tucked behind the Teak Tree, which you can find on the corner of Selby St and Fitzwilliam Street. The physical address is 437 Fitzwilliam St but THE DOUBLE DOORS FACE SELBY STREET and you will see a small set of stairs from the sidewalk going to the office. Head South on Selby Street and you will find a small parking lot on your left – first driveway on your left. You turn into the parking lot and I have the first parking spot reserved my office – spot #5. I have this spot reserved for clients. The other parking spots are reserved for the other businesses in the Fitzwilliam Gate area. I have a parking policy that you need to be aware of. There may be another appointment after yours so please do not stay parked there, and head over to Bocca for a coffee, or some shopping in the area. The spot will be needed for the next person coming to their appointment.

You arrive!

I do not have a waiting room in my office. The set up is such that when you walk through the door, you enter into my counselling room. If you arrive quite early, I may still be in session with another client. I generally have the door locked when I am meeting client’s to prevent any disruptions and have a sign on the door saying we are “In session’. I politely request that if you are early, you do not stay and hang out right outside the office door as this is disruptive for the current client in their session. Please either wait in your vehicle, or have a wander around the Fitzwilliam Gate area until your appointment time. I know it’s not a perfect system, but it’s the best I can do.

If the sign says “Open” then please come on in! It’s just me. I try really hard to start and end my sessions on time so that I am available when you arrive. If you are late, we won’t be able to go past our time to make up for that, as I may have appointments booked after you.

We meet!

If you are here for a meet & greet I find it helpful for that to be with the parent and child to view the office and meet me and have a little “pop by” to check it all out. If everyone is comfortable and it feels like a fit then we schedule the intake appointment and that is just with the parents.

The initial intake appointment is for going over consent forms and gathering history and finding out what is going on, what the concerns are, and how we can work together. Again, for the intake it is just with the parent, no kids yet! This session is just to talk about what’s lead up to what’s going on now. I will go over my policies with you. Please be aware of my no show/late cancellation policy, my parking policy I mentioned above is also important, and then I have an entire separate social media policy we get to over. I also review with you my approach in synergetic play therapy, what that looks like, what happens during session, how we communicate, expectations, and goals for service (behaviors we want to see get better) and discuss how do we know we are making progress.

If you are coming in through an EAP service, we have one document to go over on limits of Confidentiality and EAP services.

We get together again!

I hope by the end of the session, that it has been helpful for you. You may have been pretty stressed out coming, and worried about how it’d go. If we are meeting for play therapy for your child, we will talk about what to tell them, and how play therapy goes. You will get to see all the items in my room, and we can talk about the process. If we’re meeting again just for you, for step-family counselling, we’ll open up my online schedule and set an appointment.
